Parks History

Morris-Erickson Park

The area around Long Lake has always been a recreation center for the people of New Auburn with the dam and weir being constructed in 1927.  Between the years 1930-1935, Margaret M. Campbell conveyed land to Chippewa County for use by the public as a park and “for no other purpose as long as so used”.  Arnt Erickson, a prominent member of Chippewa County, held a mortgage lien against the premises, but consented to giving the land to the County.

Where Does the Name Come From?
Mr. Erickson was born in Norway on July 4, 1866 and moved to Wisconsin at the age of 16. He became a merchant in New Auburn and eventually went into real estate and banking. He represented the Village of New Auburn as a Chippewa County Board Supervisor for eight terms, serving as the chairman four times, and played a significant role in many developments throughout Chippewa County.

John A. Morris, a successful businessman and forty-year resident of Chippewa Falls, also served on the County Board and was instrumental in many civic improvements throughout Chippewa County including the development of the County Park System. Both Mr. Erickson and Mr. Morris are honored with a monument at the park.

Morris-Erickson Park was formally constructed as a campground in 1955 and today hosts 28 campsites on a little over 5 acres along the western shore of Long Lake. We invite you to spend a truly “unplugged” stay at this cozy, family-friendly gem in Western Wisconsin!
