Parks History

Round Lake

The area of the northeast corner on Round Lake was originally privately owned.  The owner passed away leaving no will or descendants so the property was put up for sale but did not successfully connect with a buyer. Chippewa County made the decision to purchase the land, (which consisted of a boat launch and prairie area), for $1.00 in the early 1960’s. In June of 1967, the County Lands and Parks Committee agreed in favor of a project to create a park on Round Lake and development of the land got underway.

The stretch of sandy beach on this property has been termed some of the finest natural beach in the area. At the time of the purchase, Round Lake Road ran right next to the beach creating a serious safety hazard due to high traffic volumes from bathers and others using the road. As part of the development plan, a proposal was made to re-route the Round Lake Road, build a parking lot and establish rest rooms and a changing house for beach users.

In August of 1967, the Chippewa County Board of Supervisors voted to authorize the County Lands and Parks Committee to create the Round Lake swimming beach. The plans included purchasing a 120-acre piece of land from the Werner Estate on the north end of the lake. In 1968, an application was made for the land to be changed to “special use.

In 1995, construction was started on moving the road and creating the boat launch side of the park.  Soon after, the road was fully relocated, the day park side and beach were constructed.

A full reorganization of the park occurred in 2,000 with the addition of a pavilion, bathrooms, and grills. Boasting a beautiful beach on one of the clearest lakes in Chippewa County, the Round Lake Day Park is one of the best places in the area to spend a beautiful day outdoors with friends and family!

In 2024, the last piece of construction was completed with a large playground with swing set and multiple benches being added, making Round Lake one of the best in the County!
